EOI Industry Transition Training – January 2026 – Frequently asked Questions

Industry Transition Training – Frequently asked questions for respondents not selected for training

How many places were available?

Places are being offered at no-cost but are limited to 120 Nationwide. Only current assessors in the following programs were eligible to apply:

  • ACT Energy Efficiency Rating
  • NatHERS for new homes
  • Residential Efficiency Scorecard

The training supports a smooth industry transition to existing home ratings, with demand expected to grow from Stage 2 of the NatHERS roll out in mid-2026.

The EOI process closed on 13 January 2026.

Enrolment and training will begin from early 2026.

What was the process for allocating industry transition training places?

This Industry Transition Training program is designed to support a streamlined transition for existing energy assessors ahead of the stage 2 release of NatHERS for Existing Homes.

A prioritisation process agreed by all Australian Governments has been implemented to ensure places are offered according to jurisdictional needs.

In all jurisdictions, currently accredited and active (delivered ratings in 2025) Scorecard assessors have been prioritised due to the upcoming closure of the Scorecard program on 23 June 2026. This is to ensure assessors currently delivering Scorecard assessments can transition to NatHERS for Existing Homes in time to continue their work to support Australian households to improve the performance of their homes.

I received an industry transition training offer. What’s next?

You will separately receive an enrolment email. You must complete all enrolment actions within five (5) business days.

What happens if I don’t accept the industry transition training offer within five (5) business days?

Due to the high demand for industry transition training places if you do not accept your training offer and complete all enrolment tasks within five (5) business days your training place may be re-allocated to another eligible participant. This is to ensure that those who want to participate have access to training.

Further opportunities to become a NatHERS for existing homes assessor via selected registered training organisations will be available from mid-2026.

What if I didn’t receive a place?

Currently accredited Scorecard and NatHERS assessors, and licenced ACT EER assessors offered a place in this industry transition training round will have five (5) business days to accept a training offer and complete all enrolment actions. Any remaining places after a lapsed training offer period or if a learner withdraws from training may be re-allocated to eligible assessors according to jurisdictional requirements until all places are filled.

Further opportunities to become a NatHERS for existing homes assessor via selected registered training organisations will be available from mid-2026.

Accredited Scorecard and NatHERS assessors, and licenced ACT EER assessors will still be able to access a streamlined accreditation pathway with reduced training requirements.

How do I become a NatHERS for existing homes assessor if I’m not a currently accredited Scorecard and NatHERS assessors, or a licenced ACT EER assessor?

NatHERS for Existing Homes training delivered by selected registered training organisations will be available from mid-2026.

Why was I unsuccessful in this EOI round?

Demand for industry transition training places was high, with over 320 applications received and only 120 available places. A prioritisation process was implemented to ensure eligible assessors currently delivering Scorecard assessments can transition their business offerings to NatHERS for existing homes ahead of the closure of the scorecard program on 23 June 2026.

I am an accredited Scorecard assessor and missed out on a training place, can I access training and accreditation prior to the closure of Scorecard in June 2026?

Demand for Industry Transition Training places was high, unfortunately not all assessors were able to secure a place. A selection process designed to support a smooth transition has prioritised scorecard assessors who are actively conducting assessments.  Your next opportunity to access training for NatHERS for Existing Homes will be in mid-2026 through select registered training organisations.

I am a Scorecard assessor who missed out on a training place, how can I maintain business continuity between the closure of Scorecard and gaining NatHERS for Existing Home Accreditation following the release of training through RTOs in mid-2026?

A selection process designed to support a smooth transition has prioritised scorecard assessors who were active and completing assessments in 2025. All Scorecard assessors who completed an assessment in 2025 have been able to secure a place.

I am currently enrolled in or have recently completed Scorecard training but have not yet gained accreditation. When am I able to access NatHERS for Existing Homes training?

This industry transition training program was open to current scorecard assessors. Current Scorecard trainees and prospective assessors who have completed training but are not yet accredited are ineligible for no-cost training. NatHERS for existing homes training delivered by selected registered training organisations will be available from mid-2026. Assessors who complete training and are accredited by Scorecard prior to it ceasing accreditation services in April 2026 will still be able to access a streamlined accreditation pathway with reduced training requirements.

I am an ACT licenced assessor, why wasn’t I deemed eligible?

Only ACT EER assessors with a Class A Building Assessor Licence (existing buildings and new plans) who have an endorsement for FirstRate4 are eligible to participate in this training. Assessors without a FirsRate4 endorsement will be able to enrol in NatHERS for Existing Home training through selected registered training organisations from mid-2026.

FAQ for Selected Candidates - Training Program - What is involved?

The industry transition training program includes learning all elements to deliver NatHERS for existing homes assessments, including software tools and completing 3 training assessments in real homes.

The minimum training commitment consists of two elements:

  1. Conduct NatHERS Assessments in Existing Homes
  2. Existing home tool training (magicplan and AccuRate Enterprise)

Note: Work Health and Safety (WHS) training may also be required if CPPCOM4002 or an equivalent unit is not already held

How long is the training expected to take?

It can take up to 8 weeks for part-time learners to complete the training and assessment tasks, including time for resubmissions if needed. If learners are able to study full time then the time to complete the units is significantly reduced.

I have already completed a work health and safety (WHS) training unit. Can that be used to meet the WHS requirement?

All assessors are required to hold CPPCOM4002 – Implement safe work practices in the property industry or an equivalent unit.

Equivalent WHS units may include:

  • CPPHSA4005A: Minimise health, safety and security risks when assessing home sustainability
  • CPCCBC4002: Manage work health and safety in building and construction projects
  • CPCCWHS2001 and CPCWHS3001
  • CPCPCM2043 Carry out WHS Requirements
  • A unit identified as equivalent to CPPCOM4002 on training.gov.au.

Most assessors will already have sufficient WHS training. For those who do not yet meet the minimum WHS requirement, CPPCOM4002 will be offered at no cost to industry transition learners.

I have completed the NatHERS Certificate IV or Scorecard training but am not currently an accredited assessor. Am I eligible to submit an EOI?

No, the industry transition training program is only open to current and active assessors from the following schemes:

  • NatHERS (new homes)
  • Scorecard
  • ACT EER
What additional support will be available to help me through the learning process?

Helpdesk

DCCEEW and CSIRO are committed to providing a responsive helpdesk to support assessors through the learning process. The helpdesk contains additional learning resources, handy articles on the assessment process and has a function to enable assessors to lodge support requests.

Drop-in support sessions

The team at CSIRO host multiple drop-in support sessions each week. These informal sessions provide an opportunity for live modelling support and enable assessors to ask questions and learn from the questions raised by peers. Details on times and how to access these drop-in sessions will be provided to successful EOI applicants once enrolled in training.

Software bootcamps

To supplement self-paced tool training, the team at CSIRO will be hosting live software bootcamps to walk assessors through using the tools. These sessions will supplement learning with practical worked examples and provide an opportunity to ask questions while being guided through the assessment process. Details on times and how to access software bootcamps will be provided to successful EOI applicants once enrolled in training.

Mentor program

The department is currently in the process of recruiting a pool of expert assessors to act as mentors who will be able to help new assessors understand the tools and assessment process – both during their training and once accredited. More information on this will be available in early 2026.

Can you elaborate on the requirement to recruit 3 homes?

Learners will complete tool training in magicplan and AccuRate enterprise alongside the unit Conduct NatHERS Assessments in Existing Homes (CNAEH). Assessors will then put all training into practice to complete three real-world assessments in existing homes. To ensure assessors can demonstrate competency in applying the technote and using rating tools across all housing typologies learners will need to recruit:

  • A single story class 1 home
  • A double story class 1 home
  • A class 2 apartment
Existing Homes assessment tools - Do I have to pay for a magicplan subscription?

No. Access to the NatHERS existing home workspace on magicplan will be provided at no cost to learners in the industry transition training program. There is no requirement to purchase or subscribe to an individual plan or license in magicplan.
Access to AccuRate Enterprise is free.

Is my device compatible? Do I need to purchase new equipment to use magicplan?

Magicplan is currently available on both iOS and Android devices. Although you can use magicplan on android and older iOS devices, you will not be able to use the LiDAR auto scan feature unless using a LiDAR enabled iOS device. Without a LiDAR enabled device, the in-home data collection process is slower, as you will need to manually identify all corners and objects such as windows to scan a room. Assessors using an iPad Pro will benefit from simpler and faster data collection processes due to the LiDAR auto scan feature and larger screen sizes which make editing floorplans, navigating forms and accessing supporting resources such as the existing home Technical and Guidance notes easier.

You do not need to purchase new equipment to participate in the training program or NatHERS for existing homes. For more information and to check if your current devices are compatible, visit: magicplan supported devices.

How much does a LiDAR enabled iOS device cost?

Assessors are responsible for the provision of their own devices including computers, phones and tablets. The department cannot provide indicative device costs, or tax advice regarding the purchase of equipment for use in your assessor business. Any purchase of equipment is an individual business decision.

Can I complete training using NatHERS tools other than AccuRate?

No, during stage one of NatHERS for existing homes, AccuRate Enterprise (Existing) is the only accredited existing homes rating tool.
It is anticipated that from mid-2026 new user interfaces will begin to enter the market.
