Predictions in Project Management - Transformed’s CEO and Founder Michael Young delivers a keynote

06-Nov-2017 AIPM’s 2017 Conference was held on the 22-24 October in Melbourne.  With over 500 delegates, this year’s conference focused on the theme of I3.  The three “I’s” signifying the new world of project management and standing for Innovate, Influence and Implement.

Michael Young’s keynote presentation entitled “The Future of Project Management’ took the audience back in time to the 1970’s to see what we expected the world to be back then.  Would we experience underwater cities? What about the internet? Fast forward to the present day and whilst there has certainly been hits and misses on the expectations, project management is continually evolving to keep up with the pace of how we work, the technology we use and emerging job roles.

Michael shared his predictions for the future PM workplace, they include:
  • No reporting – everything will be automated, in real time and adaptive.
  • AI tools will predict risks and the optimum schedule
  • Project management will be less task-based and more about people, collaboration and relationships
  • Project teams will be global, virtual and distributed
  • PM’s will be freelancers
Project Management and Practice
  • Each project will have its own unique set of rules and guidelines, making singular approaches un-scalable for all initiatives
  • Industry specific tools and methods will lead to industry PM specialisation
  • Shift from “one way of managing projects fits all”, to an adaptive mash-up of conventional and agile practices
  • Model of distributed accountability and governance
  • PMs will be known for their unique systems, like chefs with signature dishes
Michael is a frequently published project and program management expert who following on from his keynote topic, will shortly release an article on the future of project management.
