Transformed wins 2011 Australian Business Award for Project Management
24-Jul-2011
Transformed has been recognised among Australia’s most progressive organisations, winning the Australian Business Award for Project Management in the 2011 Awards. The Australian Business Awards challenges the full spectrum of private, public and non-profit sector organisations in Australia through its comprehensive business and product award categories. Now in its sixth year, the Australian Business Awards program recognises organisations that demonstrate the core values of business excellence, product excellence, corporate responsibility, sustainability and commercial success in their respective industries. A total of 103 recipients were honoured from the 928 organisations that participated in the 2011 Awards. The Australian Business Award for Project Management recognises organisations that demonstrate excellence in project management. Commenting on the win, Michael Young, Managing Director said: “Transformed has been passionate about our role in the developing individual and organizational capability in project, program and portfolio management. Working with key industry bodies, we proudly play an active role leading and shaping the project management industry. It is an honor to be commended for our professional contributions to the industry as a whole by the Australian Business Awards” As an AIPM Endorsed Course Provider and AIPM sponsor, Transformed’s team of award-winning experts deliver a range of project management qualifications, certifications and short courses that combine best-practice theory as well as real world practical skills.
Transformed Managing Director, Michael Young, has been instrumental in developing key industry standards including developing the world’s first competency standard for project portfolio managers on a voluntary basis on behalf of the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM). It is intended that this Standard will be used to improve project portfolio management capability in organisations, which in turn promotes efficient resource use and more profitable project outcomes. Tara Johnston, Program Director of the Australian Business Awards, said the standard of entries for 2011 was a testament to the strength and resilience of the Australian economy. “Australian businesses continue to adapt business processes, invest in product development and develop dynamic e-business initiatives that increase productivity and quality standards for all. The Australian Business Awards provide a welcome opportunity for organisations committed to business and product excellence to receive recognition throughout their respective industries for driving positive business outcomes,” said Johnston. “We are proud that the Awards continue to promote the key values in the workplace which foster a vibrant organisational culture and encourage enterprise, product innovation, service excellence, marketing excellence, environmental sustainability and community contribution. We would like to congratulate all the 2011 winners for achieving exceptional results within the respective award categories.” Business award entries are separated by industry classification per award category and evaluated in accordance with the award criteria across seven main areas, including leadership and strategy, impact on industry, adaptability and sustainability, human resource management, customer relationship management, process management and evidence of success. Project Management Articles
- The Importance of Project Sponsorship
- The oxford dictionary defines a sponsor as simply someone who "makes himself or herself responsible for another". In a project sense this means taking on responsibility for the success of a project in an organisation. It means commitment to project outcomes and to the people involved in delivering these outcomes.
- Project Management Breeds Innovation
- One of the earliest activities of the Rudd Government was to recognise the importance of innovation to Australia's future and to commission a review of the management of innovation in Australia.

- What is there for project managers after PRINCE2?
- PRINCE2™ provides a great roadmap for projects – identifying the key activities to be performed to deliver results – but just having PRINCE2™ doesn't make you a project manager.

- Do executives support project management?
- Putting in place a Government requirement to build project management capability is all well and good but how reasonable is it to expect agency executives to come to the party?
- A common approach for management of Government projects
- Consistency of approach was a core theme in the recommendations of
Sir Peter Gershon in his review of the Government’s use of ICT (2008).
Gershon recommended consistency of governance – a whole of government
strategic vision for ICT and funding that moves away from ‘business as usual’
funding to an efficiency-based approach.

- Which project mangagement methodology makes you a better project manager?
- The answer – none! A sound methodology alone does not a great project manager make.

- Is a project really a project if it doesn't deliver benefits?
- While the Gershon report (2008) found that 52% of Government IT projects were delivered on or under budget and 43% were delivered within timeframes, only 5% reported that they actually identified and measured the benefits from a project.

- There's Quality and There's Project Quality
- Budgets and timeframes are integral elements of project management and are often the key elements used when assessing a project’s performance. However a key question that should be included in the mix is “did the project deliver what was expected”.
Article - There's Quality and There's Project Quality (32 KB)
- 6 Tips on Managing Project Quality
- Commentators have differing views on what constitutes a quality project. The generally agreed parameters are that it delivers the desired outcomes on time and within budget. Through our long experience, the Transformed team has identified 6 key factors that improve project quality:
- Conflict Resolution for Project Managers
- Because it involves people, conflict in project management is inevitable.
- Project Team Motivation
- A poorly motivated team has been known to unravel even the best project plan. A good project manager needs to know how to harness the initial excitement that comes with starting a project and use it to maintain motivation – leading to success throughout the project’s lifecycle.
- Change Management in Projects
- According to change guru Peter Senge (1999), most change initiatives fail simply because they fail to produce hoped-for results. Given that project management is all about changing the status quo, effective change management is critical to project success.
- Communication for Project Managers
- What's the fuss about communication skills in project management? It's pretty simple stuff isn't it? If you can talk and if you can write you can communicate. What's so hard about that?
- What are 'Project Health Checks'?
- The Health-check is a reflective learning exercise. A ‘Health-check’ is a snapshot of the status of a project or programme in order to identify what is going well and what areas need improvement.
- What they don't teach you in PM Training
- The 28th August saw the long-awaited release of the Performance Audit Report on ‘The Firelink Project’ which laid the blame for the calamity squarely on the lack of project management expertise. President of the Australian Institute of Project Management (ACT) Michael Young casts some doubt on whether the ACT Government is sufficiently prepared to resolve the issues that caused the problem in the first place.
- Project Managers - Are you certifiable
- If you have worked as a Project Manager for some time and have developed expertise and valuable experience you might consider formalising this experience with an up-to-date Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) ‘RegPM’ certification.
- Project Manager Skills Shortage - Disaster or challenge
- Are project managers game enough to step back and look at where they are and how the profession might pull out of the skills shortage mire to the clear water the profession seeks for its future?

- Governance - How to Control the Project Environment

executives. But what is ‘Good Governance’ and how does it help an organisation to
ensure strategic outcomes are delivered.

- Negotiate the Minefield and Become a Project Manager
- To become a great project manager you will require excellent knowledge (demonstrated by qualifications); great leadership, people and communication skills and a depth of experience demonstrating sound practice in project management that will earn you AIPM certification as a Registered Project Manager.

- Great Project Managers can manage anything
- Good project managers have skills that apply in every management profession.
Most people understand the traditional view of project managers. They establish a project's scope, prepare budgets and schedules, plan communications, monitor and report on all the distinct tasks needed to deliver results.
